Agakingo or Gakingo or Ku’Agakingo
Details
Agakingo or Gakingo or Ku’Agakingo is a famous seasonal well that serves water to people of Kibaya village, Bunagana Town Counicl, Bufumbira South Constituency or County, and of course Kisoro District, South Western Uganda.
Gakingo or Agakingo is specially known for very clean water that, according to the residents, can be fetched and drunk without first boiling. Of course, health-wise, this could be disastrous given the fact that the presence or absence of microbes cannot be judged by our naked eyes. However, generally speaking, the well is well-protected.
Given its small size, Gakingo or Agakingo is not bothered by any grazing animals, further protecting its water from zoonotic diseases. However, the small size makes it dry off a few days after rainy season. As such, it serves the community members well, only during rainy season, for it can hold maybe a week or two during a dry spell and also depending on the number of households utilising it.
Currently, Bunagana and a part of Kibaya village is served by tapped or piped water, making the well remain for a few of the disadvantaged homes deep down in the village. However, in general, Agakingo is a place that deserves a memory lane among the dwellers of Kibaya village.
Sometimes, children meet their fellows as they go to fetch water, creating long-lasting memories around such a small place. As such, Gakingo or Agakingo or Ku’Agakingo as we used say, ‘Yagiye Ku’Agakingo’ (He has gone to Gakingo or Agakingo), is a revered water well that should forever be remembered.
