President Museveni asks us to preserve our local languages, protect indigenous knowledge, & promote local cultures

Museveni on local languages

Preserve local languages, protect indigenous knowledge, and jealously promote local culture – President Museveni.

In his latest remarks regarding Tooro Kingdom and the new King, President Museveni has called upon leaders to preserve local langauges, promote indigenous knowledge, and jealously promote local culture, which aligns well with Bafumbira Beza’s over-all vision and the inspiration behind our grand culture-focused initiative called Culture Unity.

How Museveni’s Culture Remarks Aligns with Bafumbira Beza!

A few month ago, we set out on a plan to re-visit, explore, document, and showcase Bafumbira Culture in all forms possible and innovatively connect these cultural efforts to tangible socioeconomic development and unity.

As such, we designed and launched Bafumbira Beza, a Bafumbira culture-focused social, learning, and opportunity-sharing platform. Since then, we have inspired hundreds in matters regarding their identity and heritage as Bafumbira and, in the process, accumulated thousands of followers on our social media and hundreds of official members here at Bafumbira Beza.

While our problem statement is clear and our value proposition so convincing, it was rewarding to wake up to President Museveni’s call upon leaders to invest in preserving local languages, indigenous knowledge, and culture. This further shows that we are indeed on the right track!

President Museveni made these remarks in his official communication regarding the newly enthroned King of Tooro Kingdom. In his words, the President emphasized this endeavor in these words:

“I call upon our cultural leaders to thoroughly address the institution of marriage and promote responsible family life. We must go back to our traditional ways of conducting marriages, which provided clarity and helped maintain social order….We must also guard our language, culture and indigenous science jealously. Our local knowledge is disappearing…We must preserve our indigenous science, crafts, cultural practices and heritage. These are important for our identity and our survival.” – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, Uganda.

Importantly, note that Bafumbira Beza is simply a drop in the ocean of the overall culture-focused ambitions we have here at MIKLAH LIFE. Our major innovation regarding local cultures and languages across Uganda and Africa is called CULTURE UNITY. Bafumbira Beza is simply one of the branches of this grand culture program.

President Museveni’s remarks shows that our vision is critical and Uganda and everyone else in their own rights must invest in exploring their culture, identity, and heritage, and jealously preserve their local languages and indigenous knowledge. We have already stressed these issues in our problem statement on the ABOUT US page, and we hope it rekindles your love for your own culture.

Problems facing local languages and culture

President Museveni on local language preservation

According to UNESCO, a local language is lost globally every after 2 weeks. This means that, in a month, we lose 2 local languages, and this becomes a total of 24 local languages in a year. At this rate, UNESCO states that 40% of the available indigenous languages (96% of all the 7,000 existing languages) are posed for extinction.

When a local language is lost, it goes away with cultural and intellectual heritage of communities. Additionally, lack of local language for learning makes learning very difficult. Bafumbira Beza and the overall Culture Unity are on the mission to preserve and showcase local cultures and languages.
